CD Reviews

May 2002 by John Chacona for One Final Note

Carlo Morena's academic training in Italy was in classical performance and you can almost hear a Schubert impromptu in the purling passagework of his very pretty compositions on this new CD from the Belgian label W.E.R.F. Step-In is this trio's second recording for the label (What We're Hearing was the first) and it is full of relaxed bonhomie and a warm, collaborative spirit. The shade of Keith Jarrett is never far away in Morena's keyboard conception, not unusual for younger European idiomatic players (and more than a few Americans, too). You can really hear his echoes on the arrangement of a folk song by Carlos Parades that is the only one of the nine selections not written by the pianist or bassist Joe Fonda. It's a dark, minor key thing with a haunting melody that resolves into a hopeful sounding bridge that leads to a sensitive Fonda solo. The sense of poise and balance found here is characteristic of the session. That balance is easy to get used to. Every once in a while, I began to wish the band would get a little dirty, shake things up a bit. It doesn't happen often. Fonda's tunes (especially the Andrew Hill-ish "Circle") come closest and prod Morena to his strongest work here, even if (or perhaps because) the pianist sounds like he's a bit outside his comfort zone. There's an Italian concept called "la bella figura". If I understand it correctly, it is about grace, attention to details, surface polish and charm. This CD presents a very bella figura. If Step-In ultimately breaks no new ground and none of the three players here is an overwhelming stylist, that was probably not their point. Musical give-and-take is and there's a lot of it here to step into.

Enrico Renna for altriSuoni

Fu amore a prima vista.
Bellissima l'introduzione di Jeff Hirshfield a "Circle" di Joe Fonda; non esagera Morena a dire, nelle note di copertina, "Jeff is one of the most elegant and subtle drummers I ever heard".
