Scott Yanow for All Music Guide

The adventurous music on this set, all group originals, is played by five talented if underrated musicians. The performances are mostly fairly concise (other than two numbers that are over ten minutes apiece) with the musicians getting to the point quickly. The improvisations are fairly free (particularly the colorful ones by trumpeter Herb Robertson and saxophonist Mark Whitecage) while relating to each piece's original mood. The rhythm section is spontaneous yet often quite tight and the communication between the five players is always impressive. Although a bit esoteric in spots, this CD grows in interest with each listen.
