The Healing
Il quartetto di Joe Fonda e Michael Jefry Stevens, insieme al trombettista Herb Robertson ha girato per anni in Europa facendosi quindi conoscere ampiamente dal pubblico del vecchio continente. Il contrabbassista Joe Fonda, noto anche sotto il soprannome di "Nuclear Joe" per il suono possente che ha sullo strumento, ha lavorato e inciso con Anthony Braxton (vale la pena di ricordare due dischi di altissimo livello come il loro album in duo Ten Compositions 1995 e From the Source in quintetto, con anche Robertson, entrambi pubblicati dalla Konnex). Herb Robertson sicuramente sarà noto a molti lettori anche per la collaborazione con il batterista Tiziano Tononi nei progetti dedicati a Don Cherry e Roland Kirk. L'altro leader di questo gruppo, il pianista Michael Jefry Stevens, ha suonato e inciso con tanti musicisti importanti; da citare fra i tanti almeno il trombettista Dave Douglas. La capacità del quartetto di variare dal free alla ballad mainstream, passando per tutte le possibilita intermedie che offre il linguaggio del jazz, rischia di lasciare gli ascoltatori poco abituati a questa varietà di situazioni un pò perplessi; gli altri, invece, ne saranno entusiasti. Resta comunque da sottolineare, a parte i gusti personali di chi ascolta, come il linguaggio di questo quartetto sia molto originale; non c'è niente di scontato nella sintesi stilistica da loro operata. Il brano d'apertura "The Search", è un bell'esempio di come sia possibile fare del mainstream aggiornandolo con dei fraseggi di tipo moderno, come quelli offertici dalla tromba di Herb Robertson, un vero e proprio vulcano, capace di trovare all'interno del suo strumento tutto il possibile e, verrebbe quasi di dire, l'impossibile. Anche gli altri danno il loro contributo di originalità, specie Stevens, che è un pianista a suo agio quando l'atmosfera diventa più libera, ma anche capace di mettersi in evidenza in momenti più ancorati nella tradizione, quando si tratta di dare una precisa struttura armonica all'insieme. Robertson è capace di abbandonarsi, quando la composizione lo richiede, a suoni più morbidi, come nelle due splendide ballads "Tania's Dream" e "Lei's Song", il brano che chiude l'album. È lui che trasforma la tradizione in avanguardia, capace di suonare tutto quello che una tromba contiene al proprio interno, ma che solo lui è capace di trovare Joe Fonda fa onore al suo soprannome, "Nuclear Joe", in "Fast", una sua composizione, in cui durante l'esecuzione fa sfoggio del suo suono così possente. Molto bello e riuscito è il brano che dà il titolo all'album, "The Healing", registrato dal vivo, grazie ad un tema molto suggestivo intorno al quale ruotano le ispirate improvvisazioni dei quattro. Steven Loewy for All Music Guide This version of one of the great and often underappreciated jazz groups of the modern era features trumpeter Herb Robertson with the usual all-star rhythm section of bassist Joe Fonda, pianist Michael Jefry Stevens, and drummer Harvey Sorgen. The co-leaders share the responsibility for the compositions and arrangements, the intricacy and delicacy of which are a large part of what gives this group its distinct character. If the sensitive nature of some of the pieces causes anyone to question whether any of these players have chops, Fonda wrote the riveting "Fast," for an uplifting, blistering workout. Robertson is the sort of brass player who sends up an endless array of spidery, rubber phrases that wail with the authenticity of a laughing coyote. Favoring mutes and always throwing in touches of humor, the trumpeter impresses with his agility, range, and command. One strength of the quartet is the ability and willingness of each of its idiosyncratic members to subordinate to the ensemble sound. Fonda is a gas when he sings lightly while his fingers bounce along in solo, while co-leader Stevens' more abstractly intellectual approach adds a classically infused element, tempered by his sense of swing. The quality of sound is a bit subpar on the three live numbers, but overall this is another highly satisfying outing from this outstanding ensemble that bills itself as The Fonda-stevens Group.
